A guide to the best practices for asynchronous delivery of online education

Introduction

E-Learning is a partnership and with proper communication, participation and feedback can be successful. Both the facilitator and student need to implement best practices to ensure a positive experience.

Best Practice #1– Building Community

Through communication the facilitator builds a milieu encouraging a safe community for the students. The community consists of individuals from diverse backgrounds sharing similar qualities and characteristics that are distinguished by trust and respect.

Best Practice #2– Facilitator Presence

The facilitator is a knowledgeable, committed individual who offers expertise, professionalism and guidance to the students. The facilitator provides feedback and encourages an aura of confidence that promotes community and student involvement.

Best Practice #3 – Student Participation

Through the student’s participation and involvement an exchange occurs that results in growth and learning. Students post their assignments and comment on others by using chats, emails or discussion threads. Online learning boasts flexibility, yet the student is expected according to policy, to participate in their coursework 4 out of 7 days each week.
