Building
a learning community in cyberspace begins with the facilitator.
However, each student plays a vital role in the community as well.
The following best practices exemplify how to build and maintain
a learning community.
Role of the Facilitator
As demonstrated by: Creates a
hospitable place for learning. Creates a rich, vital partnership
with students. Supports student needs and expectations. Encourages
students to support each other. Identifies different learning styles,
needs, and expectations. Encourages active participation in discussions
and other class activities.
Creates a Positive Learning Environment
As demonstrated by: Building trust,
respect, and inclusion. Posts a warm and inviting welcome note and
sends out email prior to start of class. Posts biographical information;
asks students to post biographical information; encourages students
to respond to each other’s posts.
Uses Appropriate Language
As demonstrated by: Develops a tone
that is approachable, relevant, informative, empathic, and human; uses
light, self-depreciating humor when appropriate; avoids sarcasm. Communicates
honestly and appropriately. Develops a common language; makes certain
all students understand any jargon.
Uses Appropriate Behavior
As demonstrated by: Initiating a positive
climate prior to starting the course (i.e., the welcome note). Acknowledges
each student whenever possible. Demonstrates an open-minded attitude.
Validates students’ comments. Sparks an interest in the course.
Acts passionately and positively about the subject. Respects the privacy
of every student. Follows faculty standards set forth by each school.
Strives for Success
As demonstrated by: Gives students
tips and resources for success. Promotes active learning. Provides
timely and appropriate feedback. Teaches through facilitation.
Respects Cultural Diversity
As demonstrated by: Embraces the
differences of each student. Respects the uniqueness of each student.
Understands that students respond differently to messages and learning
techniques. Being aware of personal biases.
Role of the Student
As demonstrated by: Actively participates
in class discussions 4 out of 7 days per week. Posts assignments
on time. Asks questions when assignments are unclear. Follows class
guidelines provided by the facilitator. Follows academic integrity
policy and procedures, including sending appropriate posts and email
messages and not being involved in plagiaristic activities. Respects
all students and facilitator.
